The Spanish Discovery of the Grand Canyon
- 15.06.2026 10:27
- In 1540, Francisco Vázquez de Coronado dispatched a small group of Spanish soldiers westward from Hopi villages located in what is now Arizona. Guided by local inhabitants, they reached the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, making them the first Europeans to ever lay eyes on it.
The soldiers attempted to climb down into the canyon but completely miscalculated its immense scale. Looking down from the rim, the Colorado River appeared to be nothing more than a small stream, when in reality, it flowed thousands of feet below them. Realizing the difficulty, they decided to turn back.
